BEA'S DESIGNS
© 2017 By Thomas F. Galvin, tgalvin@rochester.rr.com
585-434-6551

Given a chance of a lifetime, lonely clerk discovers her true talent as she races against the clock to create new designs.

BEA MORRISON wants to be a fashion designer but works for a tyrant at a dress shop and sketches designs on a pad during her breaks. After her divorce, she moved to a quiet little ranch home bordering Palm Beach, close to the fashion shows and to the rich and famous. Except for an occasional drive-by shooting, it’s perfect.

Until her homeless brother arrives. Against her live-in cowboy’s wishes, Bea takes her brother in, on four conditions: he must wash daily, pay his rent, see a therapist, and get a job. She helps him clean up and takes him to see a therapist. The cowboy hires Bea’s brother and fires him the same day. Angry at the cowboy, her brother won’t come out of his room for a week. But when the cowboy’s trucker friend’s visit ends in a kitchen brawl, Bea’s brother comes out to watch the fight. A few days later, Bea comes home and finds her cowboy half naked on the couch with her sexy neighbor. She insists the cowboy attend couples counseling or it’s over.

Bea’s boss makes fun of her unusual clothes and designs and she quits her job. She arrives home and discovers that her cowboy blew her life savings on construction supplies and equipment, and was fired for incompetence. Her brother and the cowboy fight in the house and the cops take them away. Feeling alone and miserable, she sees the therapist. Hearing herself complain about men, she realizes that she needs to take care of herself, not blame men.

Bea changes her attitude and takes control of her life. In a frenzy of canvass and colors, she creates new design sketches for her portfolio. Exhausted from job interviews, Bea interviews one last time with a well-known French designer who loves her portfolio and makes her an offer on the spot. Mistaking Bea’s silent shock for objection to his offer, he doubles her salary. Bea gulps and accepts the offer. Bea’s jealous cowboy insists on meeting the Frenchman at a posh restaurant. The cowboy insults the Frenchman, embarrasses Bea, and makes a fool of himself. Infuriated, Bea kicks the cowboy out and helps her brother find a studio apartment.

The Frenchman encourages Bea to be more creative and to take risks with her designs. She opens her heart to him and they become lovers. She enters her work in an international fashion show and becomes a sensation. The Frenchman proposes and they are married at his palatial estate on the beach. Her old friends, her brother, and the cowboy with his twenty-something waitress dance through the night. They honeymoon in Paris. #

An amateur golfer hits bottom and bounces when he returns home to his domineering mother for help and falls for an older, wealthy, semi-pro golfer.

Bud is destitute so his golf buddy, Roger, sends him money to return home. Appalled by Bud’s fat girlfriend who drinks, smokes, and farts, Bud's mother offers them a loft in a broken-down building she owns in a high crime area of the city, provided they paint it and pay rent. With mattresses on floor, bad plumbing, bars and bikers next door, they settle in to hell’s kitchen.

Bud’s mother rejects their pleas for food and cash and tells them to get jobs and lose weight. Bud’s girlfriend steals food and declares war while Bud’s mother tries to pry him loose from “the fat one.” When Bud’s girlfriend is out, Bud’s mother buys him lunch every few days for several weeks to win his affections. Angry, hungry, and feeling abandoned, Bud’s girlfriend goes ballistic and they agree to go their separate ways. She cleans herself up and Bud takes her to the airport for her flight back to Scotland.

Relieved, Bud cleans himself up and arrives with ascot at his mother’s for a prime rib dinner. Instead, she cries over unpaid taxes on her broken down building. Feeling compassionate, Bud offers to burn down the building for the insurance money. Shocked and delighted, his mother agrees. But when Bud picks up the gas can at a coffee shop, his name on it blows his cover. Horrified that his mother is more cruel than he imagined, he vows never to do business with her again.

Alone again, Bud calls his buddy Roger for help. Roger tells Bud he was alone and desperate once, too, and was chased down by burly male nurses and heavily sedated in the psychiatric ward for six months where he had an epiphany that it was them, not him. He offers Bud a job if he stops drinking, cleans himself up, and gets his real estate license. Worried he’ll end up in the psychiatric ward, Bud stops drinking, changes his attitude, cleans up, gets a new used suit at the Salvation Army outlet, and gets his real estate license.

On his first sales call, Bud is grilled about his real estate inexperience by an educated, wealthy widow who is a semi-pro golfer. Humiliated and about to leave, the widow calls him back and lists her large estate with him because he is honest that he does not have the real estate experience. He sells her estate to a gangster and his bimbo girlfriend and the widow and Bud celebrate on her golf course and at her home.

During the romantic evening, Bud discovers the widow is a sexual athlete and drains him dry. Worried, she confronts Bud about his girlfriend, his past, their age differences, and how they feel about each other. Bud is honest with the widow about being a con man and wants to change. The widow is pleased. Bud’s mother tells the widow that Bud is a loser, but the widow disregards her. Determined, Bud’s mother plots to get him back but fails. Bud marries the widow, and Bud’s mother stalks them on their Bahamian honeymoon. #

Re: Seek Family Comedy Screenplays w/Unique & Quirky Characters

Hello,
I wish to submit my feature-length drama screenplay, "A Grand Life" to you for consideration.

Title: A Grand Life

Logline: A trio of young adult siblings visits their grandmother over Thanksgiving weekend and get involved in social media blackmail, coming out of closet, and vehicular manslaughter.

It is a story about a estranged dysfunctional family who resents going away on a family holiday as they struggle with all their life issues. "A Grand Life" is therefore representation of the struggles faced by today's young generation. It's a coming of age movie that would interest wider audience as it deals with social issues that most of the young generation of today face with old people. The story is light hearted and funny at times with 4 main characters who are very different from each other. It is about sweet and salty relationship between a grandmother and her three grandchildren with different personalities and is about having a wonderful time when life doesn't go the way we want.

I believe the engaging story with dynamic characters will appeal wider audience. Let me know if you would like to read the full-length screenplay and I will get you a copy immediately.

Best regards,
